The glue that holds the Middleton community together is its team of exceptional educators. They aim to groom independent thinkers who take responsibility for their learning and are compassionate, responsible and active global citizens. As every child’s experience is made authentic, we welcome educators who have joined us on this journey to nurture and bring out the best in them. We speak to Jonathan Wilkinson, Grade 9 teacher of Middleton International School Tampines, to find out what inspired him to pursue this calling in education.

Tell us about yourself

PhotoI am originally from Melbourne, Australia, and have been lucky enough to work in education for seven years. Before becoming a teacher, I studied journalism and worked briefly as a sports radio producer and freelance writer. I officially began my journey as a teacher after deciding on a career change and enrolling in the Master of Teaching course at Melbourne University. Currently, I'm studying a Master of Educational Psychology, focusing on the areas of critical thinking, student motivation, human development, and individual learning differences. I moved to Singapore at the beginning of 2019 and live with my partner, Ellise, and our dog, Sonny.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

My mother, who is a teacher, inspired me to pursue a career in education. When I was young, she would say how immeasurably rewarding she found teaching to be, both professionally and personally. I have always been an enthusiastic learner and believe that working in education is the perfect way to continue this passion.

What are you looking forward to most in the new academic year?

I am most looking forward to immersing myself in the Middleton International School family. I consider it an immense privilege to teach alongside and exchange ideas with teachers and students from around the world. It is these stories that make Middleton a diverse and vibrant learning community.
